Walking by Faith (Even When You keep Tripping Over the Obstacles)

Walking by Faith (Even When You keep Tripping Over the Obstacles)

Have you ever looked at those beautifully aesthetic social media accounts where someone is waking up at 5:00 AM, sipping pristine hot tea, journaling under perfect lighting, and looking completely at peace with the universe?

Yeah. Me neither.

Usually, my morning looks a little less "peaceful sanctuary" and a lot more "where on earth did I leave my keys, why is the dog barking, and did I actually remember to turn the coffee maker on?"

Sometimes, the concept of "walking in faith" gets packaged as this smooth, effortless stroll down a paved, sunny path. But if you’ve spent any time in the real world—navigating heavy seasons, family transitions, career shifts, or the exhausting trenches of caregiving—you know that walking in faith feels a lot less like a pristine stroll and a lot more like a rugged hike through the woods. In the dark. While wearing shoes that are slightly too tight.

The Beauty of the Scenic Route (and the Potholes)

The truth is, God rarely takes us on the straight, flat highway. He tends to take us on the scenic route. And let’s be honest, the scenic route has potholes. It has steep inclines that make you question your cardio choices. It has moments where you want to look up at the sky and say, "Are we there yet?"

But it’s those exact uphill climbs that build our spiritual muscle. James 1:2-4 drops some incredibly raw truth on us about this:

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

Now, let's be real for a second. When you're in the middle of a trial—whether it's an incredibly toxic workplace dynamic, a family hardship, or just feeling completely unseen—"pure joy" is usually the last thing you're feeling. And that is okay! God isn't asking us to flash a fake, plastic smile and pretend everything is perfect.

He’s asking us to let the endurance do its work. The trials don't break us; they break away the stuff we don't need to be carrying anymore. They shape our empathy, deepen our roots, and give us a testimony that can actually comfort someone else down the road.

One Step at a Time

If you are standing in a season right now where the fog is thick and you can’t see five miles down the road, take a deep breath. You don't need to see the whole map. You just need enough light for the very next step.

As it says in Psalm 119:105:

"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."

Notice it says a lamp for our feet, not a massive stadium floodlight for the next ten years. A lamp just gives you enough light to take one step without wiping out.

If you are trying to build something new, survive a tough environment, or just stay anchored when life feels completely upside down, you are not failing because it feels hard. The struggle is proof that you are moving forward. You are being shaped into exactly who you need to be to walk into your purpose.

Pull Up a Chair at the Desk

I didn't start this website or build the Nurses Desk because I have all the answers or a perfectly flawless life. I built it because I’ve spent decades learning how to look for the light in some pretty shadowy corners.

Whether you are a healthcare worker, a family caregiver, or someone just trying to find a pocket of peace in a noisy week, I want this space to be a breather for you. No fake perfection here—just real tools, a lot of grace, and a community walking the same rugged path together.

If you need a physical tool to help you sit down, process the heavy stuff, and give it over to God, grab our free 3-Part Reflection & Decompression Bundle. It’s completely free, right at the top of the page. Print it out, pull up a chair, and let’s take the next step together.
